As Cities for People go, Curitiba stands as a shining example.

3 time Mayor of Curitiba Jaime Lerner was first appointed in 1971.  Jaime Lerner believed that Curitiba should be a city for people, not for cars. And his belief made a tremendous difference to the future of the city. (more…)

Last week, I talked about Good Cities – a concept described by the Danish architect Jan Gehl. But just how do you make Good Cities?

Read some of my thoughts in the section how to make cities for people of my website. Interestingly (I think), Jan Gehl had a very different approach to the lightning fast method used by Jaime Lerner in Curitiba – discussed here.

Jan Gehl writes about the change that happened in Copenhagen on p.14 of the Adelaide study.  Over a 40 year period there was a step by step policy to turn the city from a car city to a city for people. But what made it all happen? (more…)

Welcome to Cities for People

Hello, and thank you for visiting www.citiesforpeople.net.  I only started the Cities for People site a couple of weeks ago so it is a little bare just now. Soon, you will see stories of of how cities have transformed to be better for people, such as Curitiba, Copenhagen and Malmö.

There’ll also be ideas of how to make your city change, what to build and the part you can play – and we can all play a part.
